Art Rock... wtf!?
I've been really intrigued, lately, by a development in music known as Art Rock, which is basically music written within the framework of rock and roll, yet which additionally incorporates classical elements, orchestration, and some sort of intellectuality. Or simply, rock and roll music which isn't confined to the simple elements of common popular music. This intrigues me, because I've always been able to appreciate both forms of music: the often rough, moving sounds of rock and roll, and the beautiful, melodic constructions of classical music. Art Rock takes all of this and mashes it together, into one single sound. To me, this is the perfect, ideal marriage of musical sound: the rough, electrifying beats of rock and roll with the beautiful, melodic phrases of classical music. Hence, many of my favorite bands fall into this category -- The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Queen.
